Become Aware and Protect Against the Latest Cyber Threats
Cybercrime is moving into a new age. It has
evolved from a hobby to a money-making business and then to a global threat of
industrial, political and possibly even military use. In its most recent
Security Threat Report, Sophos, an Internet security company, posited this
conclusion.
Recent news has focused on the danger of
‘malware'. This is dangerous computer code that Cisco España
criminals spread to
infect computers and steal personal information for monetary gain. Email and
infected sites are common methods for spreading malware. However, social
networking has also become a breeding ground for data theft as it is
increasingly intertwined with our daily lives.
Cyberwarfare and Cyber Terror – The Latest
Threats
Sophos now concludes that cybercrime is not
motivated by monetary gain. Instead, Sophos identifies other threats and
practices that pose grave dangers to the modern interconnected world.
According to the report, "There are
increasing fears that critical infrastructures might be vulnerable to remote
hijacking and unauthorized control, potentially causing devastating damage, as
terrorists shift to new areas to spread panic." While both governments and
political activists seem to see the Internet as the next big battleground,
legitimate and more violent forms of protest have found new homes online.
Hacking is now part of some countries'
military arsenal. Small-scale attacks on websites of embassies and government
institutions have been done. Although we have not seen any incidents of
exploiting core services like power, water, or traffic control systems, the
possibility of such attacks is a concern for all countries. The UK created the
Office for Cyber Security last year, a military organization that aims to fight
cyber-invasion and combat enemy networks in cyberspace.
